The Wilkes Central Eagles's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their third straight loss. 2024 welcomed they with a 55-33 loss courtesy of West Wilkes. While losing is never fun, Wilkes Central can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 396th, while West Wilkes is ranked 161st).
Despite the loss, Wilkes Central still got an impressive performance from Anna Rollins, who scored 18 points along with five steals. Rollins scored a full 54.5% of Wilkes Central's points, the ninth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Chloe Lyon, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds.
Wilkes Central's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 5-7. As for West Wilkes, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wilkes Central is on the road again on Wednesday and play against Hibriten at 6:30 p.m. on January 3rd. Hibriten will be looking to keep their six-game home win streak alive. As for West Wilkes, they will head out on the road to face off against Forbush at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Forbush's defense has only allowed 26 points per game this season, so West Wilkes' offense will have their work cut out for West Wilkes.
