Five Teams, 196 Individuals Win State Wrestling Titles

DENVER - Five teams and 196 individuals were crowned state champions Saturday, the final day of the 2024 Colorado High School Activites Association's Wrestling State Championships, at Ball Arena.

Over the course of the three days, over 1,000 wrestlers competed with one champion being named in each weight class across all five classification.

Four wrestlers concluded their careers undefeated at the state championship event, as they each won their fourth-straight title. While Mullen's Dale O'Blia (3A, 120) and Fort Lupton's D'mitri Garza-Alarcon (3A, 138) join a long list of boys four-time wrestling champions, Pomona's Persaeus Gomez (Girls, 130) and Calhan's Ciara Monger (Girls, 235) became the first-ever four-time girls wrestling champions (girls wrestling became a CHSAA-sanctioned sport for the 2020-21 school year).

Among the teams, three first-time champions were crowned, as Mullen won the 3A title, Mead captured the 4A championship and the Pomona girls were victorious for the first time. Pomona also captured the boys' 5A championship, marking its sixth-straight title, while Meeker (2A) won its ninth state title in boys wrestling.

During Friday evening's session, CHSAA honored its coaches with 20 years of service: Brian Hufford (Northglenn), Michael Stelling (Northglenn), Bobby Matthew (Niwot), Kyle Low (Arapahoe), Jeff Harrington (Mountain Range), David Benedict (Vista Peak), Ed Soto (Pueblo County).
