Marion County is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They took down Eagleton College & Career Academy 33-14. Mason Mays and Zaiden Humphrey were among the main playmakers for Marion County as the former rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns and the latter rushed for 81 yards and one TD. That's the most rushing yards Mays has posted since back in October.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Marion County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 323 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 176 rushing yards in nine consecutive contests.
Marion County didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Harris Weeks and Brett Webb. Weeks has been hot recently, having also posted at least one defended passe the last three times he's played.
Huntingdon hadn't beaten Milan on the road since November 10, 2023 but that history sure didn't bother them on Friday. The Mustangs pulled ahead with a 35-34 photo finish over the Bulldogs. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted against the Bulldogs since September 27, 2019.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Kenton Smith and Jaydon Peete. Smith had a great game and rushed for 88 yards and a pair of scores. Meanwhile, Peete was balling out in the loss, rushing for 248 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 9.2 yards per carry.
Huntingdon's win bumped their record up to 13-1. As for Marion County, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 13-1.
Saturday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Marion County has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 210.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Huntingdon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 274 rushing yards.
