When Sioux Falls Roosevelt basketball standout Cody Larson decided to check out the University of Iowa campus, somebody forgot to tell Hawkeye basketball coach Todd Lickleiter that he was coming.
Larson, his parents and extended family made the trip from Sioux Falls and walked into the coach's office and announced that he was coming to play for the Hawks.
“He didn’t know we were coming,” Larson told the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader. "They were having a ‘shirts and skins’ scrimmage, and when I walked into his office he was totally surprised. It feels good to do this, because it takes a lot of weight off my shoulders. Now I can just go out and play.”
Entering his junior season at Roosevelt, Larson is regarded as a top 100 recruit in the class of 2010. Larson won’t be able to sign a national letter of intent until fall of 2009.
Football: Tri-Valley Falls
Harrisburg senior running back Preston Harris ran for 105 yards in the Tigers’ 13-0 win over Tri-Valley Friday night. Harrisburg ran its record to 4-1 and the fifth-ranked (Class 11-A) Tigers handed top-ranked (Class 11-B) Tri-Valley its first loss of the season (4-1).
Tri-Valley coach Brad McDonald told the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader newspaper the Harrisburg defense forced his team to make mistakes.
“We would get a drive going, and then we would do something to set us back - whether it was back-to-back penalties or a turnover," McDonald said.
Harrisburg shut out its third opponent of the season and will play at home against Luverne, Minnesota next Friday night. Tri-Valley plays Lennox next week.
Football: West Central Rolls Past Madison
West Central continues steamrolling by its opposition in Class 11-A. The Trojans did it again on homecoming night, beating Madison 49-7 Friday in Hartford.
In the game, West Central churned out 342 yards of total offense, while holding Madison to 102. The Trojans have outscored their opponent 155-28 this season. 325 of the Trojans’ total yards came in the first half, as they built a 43-0 lead.
Unbeaten (4-0) West Central plays Milbank next, while winless Madison (0-5) visits Canton.
Football: Winner Stops STM Regular Season Streak
It’s been a long time since Black Hills-area football power St. Thomas More has lost a regular season football game. Five years to be exact, but Winner stopped the win streak last Friday night.
The Warriors defeated STM 27-22 on Winner’s homecoming night, avenging a playoff knockout last fall in the Class 11-A semifinals at the same time.
Winner coach Dan Aaker told the Rapid City Journal it was a big win for his program.
“We came in with confidence and believed we could do it, that is how we try to prepare for every game,” Aaker said.
The Cavaliers last defeat came in 2003 at the hands of Hot Springs.
Volleyball: Aberdeen Central Remains Unbeaten
The volleyball match of the week in the Eastern South Dakota Conference was unbeaten Aberdeen Central against Brookings, a team that had won five of its last six matches.
The AC Golden Eagles came away from the match still unbeaten, moving their record to 9-0 (6-0 in ESD play) with a 25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16 victory over the Bobcats.
Aberdeen Central played without injured middle hitter Mariah Stolle and coach Dennis Northrup told the Aberdeen American-News it took a while for his team to adjust.
“We moved two girls because one girl was out and it just takes a little while for us to gel. We're a lot different team without Mariah, but Amy (Griffith) did a great job," Northrup said. "She had a little series in the middle where she hit two or three balls out but for the most part she was solid.”
Brookings fell to 5-6 overall, 5-3 in the ESD.
