Headlines from Day 3

Updates

11 p.m. — There it is, another CHSAA state wrestling tournament in the books. We added four more wrestlers to the list of four-time state champions, including the first two girls. And we saw a host of new team champs, from the Pomona girls, to the Mullen boys in 3A and Mead boys in 4A. Thanks to all who followed along. Let’s do this again next year. — Matt Schubert

10:40 p.m. — Calhan’s Ciara Monger caps the night with an effortless victory over Fort Lupton senior Anastacia Salazar. The Fort Hayes State commit was determined to finish the consequential night on a high note, for the crowd and of course for herself, en route to a second-round pin.

“It’s very much a relief, because I’ve had all these people coming up to me being like, ‘You better win four.’ It’s so much pressure that’s off me,” Monger said. “I’m overwhelmed with this (feat). My main point and excitement about winning four was for the history of the girls, and to show the next generation that it’s going to be hard, if if you keep pushing forward, you can do this sport.”

9:09 p.m.– History was made inside Ball Arena. Pomona senior Persaeus Gomez (34-0) became the first female four-time state champions in Colorado wrestling history after pinning Canon City Girls sophomore Kate Doughty in 1:26. — Ryan McFadden

8:53 p.m. — Mead Boys are inching closer to a 4A state title. Senior Otto Black defeated Roosevelt sophomore Chris LaLonde in the championship round of the 138-pound weight class. Later, senior Jack Glade (52-7) won his second straight title after defeating Thompson Valley’s Kellen Engelhardt in the 150-pound weight class. The Mavericks are currently in first place with 162.5 points followed by second-place Pueblo East with 132.5 points. — Ryan McFadden

7:57 p.m. — Sand Creek senior Landon Drury denies Thompson Valley’s Jackzen Rairdon a four-peat in the Class 4A 144-pound title. Drury — who won the 138-pound title in Greco-Roman at the 2023 Junior National Championships, and is a member of the USA U20 World team — controlled the match from start to finish in the 8-4 win. Rairdon’s only points came by escapes. — Kyle Newman

7:53 p.m. — We have the first four-time state champion in Colorado girls wrestling history. Pomona’s Persaeus Gomez pins Canon City sophomore Kate Daughtry in the first period to set off another standing ovation from the crowd. Gomez finishes 34-0. — Kyle Newman

7:42 p.m. — Four-timer No. 2 on the night is D’Mitri Garza-Alarcon, who beat Mullen senior Gilbert Antillion 6-1 in their Class 3A 138-pound match. Probably not as quick of a match as the crowd was expecting from the Fort Lupton pin machine, but a dominating performance nonetheless. — Kyle Newman

7:25 p.m. — Buena Vista senior Caleb Camp is denied his four-peat bid in the Class 3A 132-pound match by Trinidad senior Eddie Bowman by a score of 7-2. It wasn’t exactly an upset, as Bowman (who also won the 132-pound crown last year) won a national tournament over the summer and capped a 36-0 undefeated season. — Kyle Newman

6:54 p.m. — Mullen senior Dale O’Blia becomes the first four-time champion of the night of a possible six. He beats Severance senior Jonathan Morrison 6-0 at Class 3A 120 to become the 31st four-time champion all-time. — Kyle Newman

6:47 p.m. — Pomona freshman Justice Gutierrez (34-1) defeated Canon City Girls sophomore Piper Montoya (33-6) to win the 100-pound state title. In the 105-pound weight class, Fort Lupton senior Rylee Balcazar (45-0) capped off her perfect season by pinning Pueblo Central freshman Acelyn Duran (34-3) in four minutes of the championship round. –– Ryan McFadden

6:34 p.m. — In Class 3A at 106 pounds, Severance freshman Drake VomBaur polished off a perfect season at 41-0 and gave his family a sixth state title in the process. His older brothers were big-time wrestlers for Windsor. Vance VomBaur was a two-time state champion and wrestles at Minnesota; Will VomBaur was a three-time state champion and wrestled at Air Force. Drake beat Eaton sophomore Blake Hawkins, 7-3. — Kyle Newman

5:52 p.m. — The Parade of Champions hits hard once again. Ball Arena is packed as Durango’s Sadie Hanson delivers a stirring rendition of the national anthem, and we’re off. The UNIFIED matches are up first before we get to the championship action. — Kyle Newman

3:10 p.m. – Ball Arena has been cleared out following the last of the consolation rounds of the 2024 CHSAA state wrestling tournament. Class 5A is once again being dominated by Pomona, which is 50 team points clear of second place. Mead has a firm lead in 4A; 3A and 2A are much tighter.

Cedaredge has come out of nowhere in the 2A team title race. Wray and Meeker have finished first and second the past two years, but thanks to numerous third-place finishes and two wrestlers competing for championships, Cedaredge could pull off an upset and claim their first-ever team title. The Meeker-Wray rivalry is coming to a head with multiple individual title competitors of their own. The 2A team title race should be a thriller. – Braidon Nourse

10 a.m. — The consolation rounds have begun at Ball Arena, with those matches going through 3 p.m. until the arena is cleared out for the Parade of Champions at 5:30 p.m. Medals will be won today, and champions crowned, and we’ll be here to cover it all.

In case you missed it, we had plenty of coverage from Day 2. The Post’s Patrick Saunders told the story of Legacy 215-pounder Quinn Funk, who’s looking to repeat as a state champion for Legacy. Ryan McFadden chatted with Fort Lupton’s Rylee Balcazar, who’s eyeing perfection in her fourth and final year on the mat. And Kyle Newman caught up with Littleton’s James Horton, who won’t let being deaf stand in the way of his question to win a state title, as part of Friday night’s prep notebook.
