Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for the Merrillville Pirates, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They took a 51-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Indians on Saturday. Merrillville's loss signaled the end of their eight-game winning streak.
Merrillville lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Erin Mukes, who scored seven points. The team also got some help courtesy of Makayla Edwards, who scored four points along with two steals.
Merrillville struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Lake Central racked up ten assists.
It was another big night for Vanessa Wimberly, who scored 19 points for Lake Central. Another player making a difference was Aniyah Bishop, who scored 11 points along with eight rebounds.
Merrillville's defeat dropped their record down to 17-9. As for Lake Central, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 23-4 record this season.
Merrillville does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Lake Central and the Panthers will face off at 4:00 p.m. on February 10th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. South Bend Washington is looking to tack on another W to their six-game streak on the road.
