Escondido Charter barely beat Coastal Academy the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Tigers were the clear victors by an 11-4 margin over the Stingrays on Friday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Sam Romero made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out ten batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Matthew Hydar was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-4. Those stolen bases were his first of the season. Silas Telfer was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Escondido Charter kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Orange Glen lost 12-6 to Canyon Hills on Thursday. The Patriots haven't had much luck with the Rattlers recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Orange Glen saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alex Martinez, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Orange Glen's defeat dropped their record down to 7-6-1. As for Escondido Charter, their win bumped their record up to 7-1.
Orange Glen's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Escondido Charter has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 14.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Orange Glen, though, as they've been averaging 9.6 hits. Given Escondido Charter's sizable advantage in that area, the Patriots will need to find a way to close that gap.
Escondido Charter took their victory against Orange Glen when the teams last played back in March by a conclusive 17-3 score. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Patriots turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
