Douglas County and the Titans are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2016, but not for long. The Douglas County Huskies will head out on the road to square off against the Legend Titans at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Douglas County has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games.
Last Tuesday, Douglas County was beaten by the Raiders 87-48. While losing is never fun, Douglas County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 81st, while the Raiders are ranked seventh).
The losing side was boosted by Sofia Baldessari, who scored 27 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. That was a full 56.3% of Douglas County's points, marking the sixth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Ciara Laman was another key contributor, scoring four points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Legend waltzed into their match on Tuesday with five straight wins but they left with six. They took down Mountain Vista 61-46. Winning is a bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 26 to 9 on the offensive boards, as Legend did.
Legend's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mason Borcherding, who scored 19 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Borcherding hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Katie Lamb, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Douglas County has not been sharp recently as the team's lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-9 record this season. As for Legend, they pushed their record up to 17-1 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home.
Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant against one another: Baldessari and Maley Wilhelm. Baldessari has been dynamite this season: she has averaged 20.8 points, 2.7 steals, and 1.2 blocks. For her part, Wilhelm has averaged 9.8 points, 4.1 steals, and 7.1 rebounds.
Douglas County ended up a good deal behind the Titans in their previous meeting back in February of 2023, losing 55-41. Can Douglas County avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
