Cooper Wilkins made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. South Granville is 2-1 when Wilkins posts two or more stolen bases, but 5-6 otherwise.
In other batting news, Noah Edwards was excellent, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Vani Hernandez was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Carrboro faced off against East Chapel Hill on Wednesday. The Jaguars were the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over the Wildcats. The Jaguars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by seven runs or more this season.
Like South Granville, Carrboro also got a great game from a two-way player: Joe Smith. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Smith was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Evan Stowe, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. Levi Bienstock also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Carrboro has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games. As for South Granville, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. South Granville has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Carrboro struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
South Granville took their victory against Carrboro in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 10-0 score. Do the Vikings have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Jaguars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
