Video: Play Like A Girl Podcast 11Host Nikki B. talks to Anna Shumaker, a former UC Davis gymnast and American Ninja Warrior.
Assumption (Louisville, Ky.) captured its 21st state volleyball championship on Sunday and in the process ran the table on the 2018 season, finishing 43-0.
Coach Ron Kordes' 2018 Rockets join two previous Assumption teams going undefeated — 40-0 in 2001 and 43-0 in 2005.
We know this Rockets team is good, but is it the best Kordes has coached? Maybe the debate should be is this Assumption team the best high school volleyball team ever?
Led by 11 players — including eight seniors — who have committed to NCAA programs, the Rockets have rolled through their typically tough schedule, winning titles in the Avon (Indiana) Tournament, the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament, the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas and the Asics Challenge in Chicago.
And Assumption returns two of the three top-ranked juniors (
Anna DeBeer and
Rylee Rader) for next season.
Kordes told the Louisville Courier Journal that this team "certainly deserves to be in the conversation" among his "best ever" teams.
But 160 miles north of Louisville, the Yorktown (Ind.) Tigers are screaming they are just as unbeaten as the Rockets and also have a team loaded with future college players.
The 34-0 Tigers, however, still must defeat Indiana defending state 4A champion and No. 20 Avon in Saturday's title match to finish as unbeaten as Assumption.
Then the debate can get louder.
With Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.) losing in the playoffs last week, Yorktown replaced the Sea Hawks at No. 2. Redondo Union was the only Top 10 team to lose last week.
Yorktown is one of six unbeaten teams in the Top 25, joining Assumption, Woodstock Academy (Woodstock, Conn.), Cedar Falls (Iowa), Kentridge (Kent, Wash.) and D.H. Conley (Greenville, N.C.).
The biggest mover of the week was Lewis-Palmer (Monument, Colo.), which returned to the Top 25 by knocking off a pair of ranked teams last week. The victorious Rangers have won 21 in a row.
In addition to Lewis Palmer's return, new to the Top 25 this week are Woodstock Academy (Woodstock, Conn.), Victor (N.Y.), Avon and Logan-Rogersville (Rogersville, Mo.).
