It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Newton County Academy had no problem doing just that on Friday. They blew past the Claiborne Academy Rebels 48-20. Newton County Academy didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Grady Bergeron and Cooper Savell. Savell's rushing production has been exceptional for a while as that marked his 13th straight game with at least 112 rushing yards dating back to last season.
Claiborne Academy's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Maddox Gaston, who picked up 111 receiving yards and one TD. The Rebels also got a significant boost from Kyler Monk, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 101 yards.
The victory (which was Newton County Academy's sixth in a row) raised their record to 9-1. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 47.0 points over those games. As for Claiborne Academy, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-3 record this season.
Newton County Academy will head out to square off against River Oaks at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Generals will need to watch out since the Mustangs have now posted at least 31 points in their last eight games. Claiborne Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
