Softball Recap: Whitney Victorious

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Saint Francis, Whitney was happy to have turned things around on Wednesday. They had just enough and edged out the Davis Sr. Blue Devils 5-4. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 16-3 back in March.

Taylor Cordell tossed a big game, striking out ten batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Rebecca Rau, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Sidney Kleiner, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Whitney was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Davis Sr. only posted a batting average of .241.

Whitney has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Davis Sr., they dropped their record down to 11-9-1 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Whitney will head out to face off against Sheldon at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Huskies' pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so the Wildcats' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Davis Sr., they will head out on the road to take on Del Oro at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Golden Eagles will roll in looking for their 11th straight victory, something the Blue Devils surely won't give up without a fight.
