The Monterey Trail Mustangs had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28.5 points), and they went ahead and made it five on Saturday. They took down Edison 72-58. Given Monterey Trail's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 34th, while the Vikings are ranked 324th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Monterey Trail to victory, but perhaps none more so than Brandon Gibson Jr, who scored 19 points. Gibson Jr hasn't dropped below 19 points for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Kentrell Kelly, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Terrell Tek, who scored 19 points along with two steals. Tek hasn't dropped below two steals for 12 straight games. Another player making a difference was Arthur Grady jr., who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Monterey Trail has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 23-2 record this season. As for Edison, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-9.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Monterey Trail will take on the Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Laguna Creek will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak. As for Edison, they and the Bruins will face off at 7:30 p.m. on February 5th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Bear Creek is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road.
