Basketball Recap: Mahwah Drops Season-High Score on River Dell

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mahwah). They managed a 74-70 victory over the River Dell Golden Hawks on Thursday. Given the Thunderbirds' advantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey basketball rankings (they are ranked 122nd, while the Golden Hawks are ranked 275th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Despite the loss, River Dell still got an impressive performance from David Nunez, who went 9 for 20 en route to 27 points in addition to six assists and five steals. Nunez is becoming a predictor of River Dell's success: when he posts at least three steals the team is undefeated (and 1-6 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Aditya Pandya, who went 7 of 15 on his way to 16 points and five rebounds.

Mahwah pushed their record up to 6-3 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.3 points per game. As for River Dell, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-6 record this season.

Mahwah will venture away from home to challenge Indian Hills at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd. As for River Dell, they will challenge West Essex at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
