Two dominant backs in Quincy Orme and Keston Beavers are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Deshler Dragons will square off against the Elm Creek Buffaloes at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Deshler's defense heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They blew past High Plains, posting a 67-0 win. Considering the Dragons have won three games by more than 66 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
It was another big night for Braxton Peterson, who rushed for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 55 yards. Landyn Tuma was another key player, rushing for 59 yards and one score.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Deshler was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 362 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since the start of last season.
Another reason for the win was Deshler's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. Jackson Beam refused to say out of the backfield, picking up two sacks all by himself.
Meanwhile, Elm Creek entered their tilt with Wilcox-Hildreth on Friday with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. They came out on top against the Falcons by a score of 42-34.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Beavers and Drew Blank. Beavers had a great game and rushed for 126 yards and one TD. Meanwhile, Blank was balling out in the loss, rushing for 155 yards and one touchdown on only 13 carries, while also throwing for 110 yards and one TD.
Elm Creek didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Blake Erickson and Thomas Sullivan. Erickson got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Deshler's record is now 6-2. As for Elm Creek, their record now sits at an identical 6-2.
Thursday's contest might be decided on the ground. Deshler has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 242 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Elm Creek struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 238.6 rushing yards.
