The Mission Eagles's four-game losing streak came to an end on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 57-38 win over Economedes. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest victory Mission has managed all season.
Mission was led to victory by Isael Cerda and Leon Villarreal. Cerda dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds, while Villarreal scored 26 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. That's the first time this season that Cerda scored 15 or more points.
When it comes to explaining why Economedes lost, one person who can't be blamed is Nathaniel De La Garza. Despite the final result, he scored 17 points. That was a full 44.7% of Economedes' points, marking the 14th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Leo Zamora, who scored five points along with two steals.
Economedes struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Mission pulled down 15 offensive rebounds.
Mission's victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 9-18. As for Economedes, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-12.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mission will take on Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo is hoping to put an end to an eight-game streak of away losses. As for Economedes, they will stay at home for another game and welcome La Joya at 6:00 p.m. on January 18th. Hopefully La Joya focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Friday.
