The Marquette Catholic Explorers will head out to face off against the Roxana Shells at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Marquette Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Marquette Catholic and Althoff Catholic meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Tuesday. The Explorers never let the Crusaders get on the board and left with a 19-0 win. The victory continues a trend for the Explorers in their matchups with the Crusaders: they've now won eight in a row.
Kenna Lievers and Kennedy Eveans made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Lievers tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Eveans pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Lievers has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. At the plate, Lievers went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Eveans scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Eveans also hit a double, marking her first of the season.
In other batting news, Marquette Catholic let Alyssa Coles and Jayla Dickson run wild. Coles scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4, while Dickson went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Coles has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Lucy LaFiore, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Marquette Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .462. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Althoff Catholic only posted a batting average of .077.
Meanwhile, Roxana was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss dating back to last season. They came up short against East Alton-Wood River, falling 13-0.
Roxana's defeat dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Marquette Catholic, they picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 2-5.
Marquette Catholic's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's match. The Explorers have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Roxana, though, as they've been averaging only 0.7 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Marquette Catholic continue to outrun the ball?
Marquette Catholic might still be hurting after the 16-1 loss they got from Roxana in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can the Explorers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
