TAPPS Division I District 1 recap October 22, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in TAPPS Division I District 1 this week, Prestonwood Christian beat Trinity Christian 44-33. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Lions.
Prestonwood Christian scaled the state rankings by moving to 94 from 131 this week, the biggest jump in the league. Chris Cunningham's team climbed the ranks as a result of defeating the Trojans 44-33.
The Lions' dynamic duo of Twayne Blackwell and Jonathan Heasley proved to be unstoppable against Trinity Christian, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Blackwell threw for 97 yards and 3 touchdowns and Heasley had 69 yards receiving. Ryan Bradberry helped Prestonwood Christian's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 63 yards.
He went 9-9 with 0 interceptions.
Luke Alves was a passing and rushing force as Nolan Catholic bested Bishop Lynch. Alves' key target this week was Patrick Rich, who caught 6 passes for 60 yards.
Alves was a force in the backfield as the Vikings beat the Friars.
Thanks to the talents of Christian Hutzler and Nahshon Ellerbe, Steve Hayes' team has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Hutzler is tops in the league in passing with 1,811 yards, while Ellerbe has rushed for 1,014 yards this season. Prestonwood Christian's Michael Irvin leads the league in receiving yards with 695 on 52 catches.
Alves of the Nolan Catholic is only 23 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 128 carries Alves has put up 977 yards this year.
The Trojans' Hutzler is within 189 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Liberty Christian.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Joe Prudhomme's team takes on Prestonwood Christian. At the moment, the Vikings are in third, while the Lions are in first.
The Warriors made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 1,998 from 2,334. The improvement was largely due to a 42-7 victory over John Paul II last week.
