Marshall and Waterloo are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Cardinals will head out on the road to square off against the Pirates at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
As a matter of fact, Marshall put up the most runs they have all season on Tuesday. They blew past Wisconsin Heights 11-1. The Cardinals haven't had any issues with the Vanguards recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.
Kennedy Weisensel was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Weisensel was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Marshall let Sydney Stuntebeck and Kierstin Hoel run wild. Stuntebeck scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4, while Hoel scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Another player making a difference was Lyliane Browne, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Marshall was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .467. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wisconsin Heights only posted a batting average of .238.
Meanwhile, Waterloo gave up the first runs last Tuesday, but they didn't let that get them down. They were the clear victors by a 16-8 margin over Belleville.
Ally Schaumann spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and five unearned) runs on six hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Callie Davison was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-6. Nikomi Sullivan was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Marshall's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Waterloo, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Marshall was able to grind out a solid win over Waterloo when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 7-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cardinals since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
