Marcos de Niza (Tempe, Ariz.) snapped
Chavez (Laveen, Ariz.)'s 9-game winning streak, with a 45-27 victory on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Melvin Lewis, the Champions went into halftime with a 13-10 lead. The Padres took the lead for good with a
Josh Eckley touchdown pass to
Jacquese Moore in the third quarter.
With the win Marcos de Niza extended its winning streak to five games. MN defeated the Jaguars 70-0 last week.
Arturo Macias made a difference for Chavez. The senior quarterback threw one touchdown, ran for one touchdown and kicked one extra point. His performance brought his touchdown total to nine on the year.
Mauriece Lee was the top performer for the Tempe school. The senior running back ran for three touchdowns. He has now scored 13 touchdowns on the season.
CHS came in giving up 7.0 points per game this season. The Laveen school struggled against the Padres, which came in averaging 43.8 points per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, Marcos de Niza came away with a 34-7 victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Chavez, which notched a 69-0 victory over Sierra Linda in its previous outing.
