The Wheatland-Grinnell Thunderhawks struggled with assists on Friday (the Cheylin Cougars had ten more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Wheatland-Grinnell took a serious blow against Cheylin, falling 76-38. While losing is never fun, Wheatland-Grinnell can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 321st, while Cheylin is ranked 102nd).
Wheatland-Grinnell's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Branton Goetz, who scored ten points along with five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Daniel Mason, who scored four points along with five rebounds.
It was another big night for Pablo Bermudez, who scored 27 points along with nine rebounds and five assists for Cheylin. Bermudez also posted two+ blocks for the first time this season. Logan McCarty was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with six assists and five rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Wheatland-Grinnell and nudges their season record down to 1-6. As for Cheylin, their victory was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-2.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wheatland-Grinnell will take on Northern Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Northern Valley will be coming into the matchup with an undefeated record on the line. As for Cheylin, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Weskan at 5:00 p.m. Weskan is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 65.7 points per game.
