4A Region I District 2 recap Oct. 23, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Riverside, who took down 782nd ranked Riverside, 18-8. RAMON RENTERIA ran for 170 yards in the win.
Parkland was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in 4A Region I District 2. The Matadors vanquished the Rangers 18-8 earlier in the week.
Hanks's dynamic duo of Emilio Noriega and Patrick Pettis proved tough for Canutillo to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Noriega threw for 250 yards and four touchdowns and Pettis had 127 yards receiving. Marco Ceniceros helped Hanks' passing attack out by catching four balls for 64 yards.
CHRISTIAN JOHNSON made the biggest impact on defense this week as Parkland topped Riverside. The freshman forced one fumble and grabbed one sack.
Andrew Lopez provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Eagles lost to the Knights. He completed 11 passes for 140 yards and also ran for 164 yards. Lopez's favorite target this week was Jeremy Gonzalez, who caught four passes for 49 yards.
Jose Alvarez was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 33 carries, he ran for 211 yards as Canutillo topped Canutillo.
Jeff Cleveland's team's Noriega and Pettis have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Noriega has thrown for 1462 yards this season, while Pettis, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 38 catches for 571 yards. Alvarez from Scott Brooks' team leads the league in rushing with 799 yards.
Two of the top units in 4A Region I District 2 will face off this week when the Knights take on Horizon. Hanks' offense has scored 222 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Scorpions have allowed only 81 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Knights take on Horizon. As it stands, Hanks is in third, while David Telas' team is in first.
There should be lots of points scored when the Knights and the Scorpions face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Hanks comes in having scored 222 this season, while Horizon has scored 203. The Knights scored 63 points last week as they beat the Eagles.
Del Valle extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Eastlake, 28-14. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Conquistadores.
