After two games on the road, Broughton is heading back home. They will take on the Sanderson Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
On Tuesday, Broughton came up short against Leesville Road and fell 50-38. While losing is never fun, Broughton can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 301st, while Leesville Road is ranked 91st).
Despite the defeat, Broughton got a solid performance out of Kalajah Wright, who scored 20 points along with six steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Wright has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyra Gustus, who scored nine points along with five steals.
Meanwhile, Sanderson's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They were the victim of a tough 61-36 defeat at the hands of Athens Drive. Sanderson has struggled against Athens Drive recently, as their match on Friday was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the loss, Sanderson saw an underclassman step up: Amyah Lynn scored 19 points along with three steals. Summer Haith was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Sanderson struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Athens Drive racked up 20 assists.
Broughton's defeat dropped their record down to 5-9. As for Sanderson, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-12 record this season.
Keep an eye on the arc in Friday's contest: Broughton have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 5 threes per game. It's a different story for Sanderson, though, as they've been averaging only 4.7 threes per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Everything went Broughton's way against Sanderson when the teams last played back in January of 2023 as Broughton made off with a 52-31 win. With Broughton ahead 31-9 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
