After flying high against the Cairo Syrupmakers last Saturday, the Shaw Raiders came back down to earth. Shaw took a 78-69 hit to the loss column at the hands of Westover on Friday. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Shaw in their matchups with Westover: they've now lost five in a row.
When it comes to explaining why Shaw lost, one person who can't be blamed is Tiara Tucker. Despite the final result, she scored 38 points along with seven steals. That was a full 55.1% of Shaw's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Quishyi Walcott was another key contributor, scoring six points along with seven steals and five assists.
Even though they lost, Shaw smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Westover only pulled down nine offensive rebounds.
Westover's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jada Landers led the charge by dropping a double-double on 31 points and 15 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Landers has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Sydney Donaldson, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Shaw dropped their record down to 13-11 with that loss, which was their third straight on the road. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.3 points per game. As for Westover, their victory bumped their record up to 11-14.
Shaw will look to defend their home court on Monday against Cairo at 6:00 p.m. Shaw is facing Cairo at the right time seeing as Cairo is stuck on a 12-game losing streak. Westover does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
