Football Recap: Highland Takes a Loss

Highland dropped down to 4-5 on Thursday, ending the team's four-game streak of wins. They were beaten by the Lancaster Eagles 42-7. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 456th, while the Eagles are ranked 186th).

As for Lancaster, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 7-2. The victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 10.4 points on average over those games.

Lancaster's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Michael Marsenich, who threw for 265 yards and one TD while completing 83.3% of his passes, and also rushed for 35 yards and one touchdown. Marsenich's passing game has become a key predictor of the Eagles' success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 110 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise. Jacob Walker was another key back, rushing for 77 yards and a pair of scores on only seven carries.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Highland will face off against rival Palmdale at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st. Meanwhile, Lancaster is set to square off against their familiar foe Antelope Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
