Lone Grove hasn't had much luck against Sulphur recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Longhorns are taking a road trip to square off against the Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Lone Grove took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They blew past Victory Christian, posting a 63-7 win. The Longhorns' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Meanwhile, Sulphur got themselves on the board against McLoud on Friday, but McLoud never followed suit. They claimed a resounding 60-0 victory over the Redskins. Considering the Bulldogs have won four matchups by more than 19 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Sulphur's win came from a few key players Lone Grove will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Kale Brakefield, who threw for 263 yards and four TDs while completing 83.3% of his passes. He has been hot recently, having posted three or more passing touchdowns the last three times he's played. Sulphur's leading receiver Maddax Mobly was Brakefield's top target yet again, picking up 189 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Sulphur, racking up 12 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Carter Cole, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.
One reason for the win was Sulphur's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Cooper Cole, Kash Pickett, and George Martinez, who each picked up one sack apiece. Sulphur received some extra help from Mobly, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Sulphur pushed their record up to 5-0 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 49.7 points over those games. As for Lone Grove, their record is now 2-3.
Lone Grove took a serious blow against Sulphur in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, falling 56-0. Can the Longhorns avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
