Football Recap: Fletcher Ironside's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Penns Valley Area over Huntingdon

Penns Valley Area's game on Friday was all tied up 7-7 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They took a 35-23 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Huntingdon Bearcats. While losing is never fun, the Rams can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania football rankings (they are ranked 364th, while the Bearcats are ranked 154th).

Penns Valley Area lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Fletcher Ironside, who picked up 144 receiving yards and a pair of TDs. He showed off some serious burst, lighting up the secondary with a catch for 60 yards. Cael Smith made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.

Penns Valley Area didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Ironside and Smith. Ironside's receiving production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 103 receiving yards. Smith got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Huntingdon's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Landon Erdman led the charge by rushing for 263 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries. Those 263 rushing yards gave Erdman a new career-high. Evan Edmiston also helped out as he racked up 147 rushing yards.

Penns Valley Area's defeat dropped their record down to 1-8. As for Huntingdon, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season.

Penns Valley Area has already played their next game, a 28-0 win against Westmont Hilltop on the 24th. As for Huntingdon, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 42-13 loss against Richland on the 24th.
