The West Jefferson Buccaneers were the 73-21 winner over the Riverdale Rebels when they last played one another back in January of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. West Jefferson took a 54-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of Riverdale on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, West Jefferson can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Louisiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 341st, while Riverdale is ranked 124th).
Several Buccaneers players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Kellie Cyprian, who scored 16 points. That's the first time this season that Cyprian scored 15 or more points. Coye McClairen was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.
Riverdale's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Mazie Parmley, who scored 11 points along with nine rebounds and five steals. Parmley has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaeshaunie Martin, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and four steals.
West Jefferson's loss dropped their record down to 1-15. As for Riverdale, they pushed their record up to 16-2 with that win, which was their ninth straight on the road.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. West Jefferson won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Chalmette at 5:00 p.m. on January 18th. Chalmette will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak. As for Riverdale, they will be playing at home against West St. John at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
