After flying high against the Sanderson Spartans last Friday, the Broughton Capitals came back down to earth. Broughton fell 53-44 to Cardinal Gibbons on Tuesday. Broughton has not had much luck with Cardinal Gibbons recently, as the team's come up short the last six times they've met.
Despite the defeat, Broughton had strong showings from Kalajah Wright, who scored 17 points along with three steals, and Jane Kern, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and five steals. Wright hasn't dropped below two steals for seven straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyra Gustus, who scored four points along with seven rebounds and four steals.
Even though they lost, Broughton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cardinal Gibbons only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cardinal Gibbons to victory, but perhaps none more so than Tessa Gladieux, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds. Gladieux is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Charlotte Fusco, who scored 11 points along with four steals.
Broughton's loss dropped their record down to 6-10. As for Cardinal Gibbons, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Broughton will take on Knightdale at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Cardinal Gibbons, they will head out on the road to take on Athens Drive at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Athens Drive focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Tuesday.
