The Gates Chili Spartans's seven-game losing streak came to an end on Wednesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Vertus 61-59. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory Gates Chili has posted yet this season.
Gates Chili found their leader in underclassman Joey Vigerzi, who scored 25 points along with two steals. That's the first time this season that Vigerzi scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaden Robinson, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.
Vertus lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Na'Shon Wade, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds. Wade continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Talhah Ali, who scored 14 points along with nine assists and five steals.
Even though they lost, Vertus were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Gates Chili's win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 2-7. As for Vertus, they bumped their record down to 4-8 with that loss, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Gates Chili will take on Brighton at 7:45 p.m. on Friday. Brighton is coming into the match on a four-game losing streak. As for Vertus, they will be playing at home against Rochester Academy on Tuesday. One thing working in Rochester Academy's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three matchups.
