Video: Top 25 high school football rankings
De La Salle is No. 10 in the national rankings.
First-round playoff games among Top 25 teams generally tend to be blowouts and afterthoughts.
For the most part around the Bay Area that was true but with one notable exception: No. 13 Wilcox at No. 10 Menlo-Atherton. It was better than advertised.
Paul M Rosa rushed for 237 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner, an 8-yard run in the first overtime to lead Wilcox to a wild 42-35 Central Coast Section Division 1 victory at the fourth-seeded Bears. It turned the tables on MA's 33-28 win over Wilcox in the D1 championship last year.
Both teams advanced to the regionals and won state titles.
After Rosa gave his team the lead on the first possession of OT, the Bears were thrown for a seven-yard loss. A pass breakup in the end zone, run for no gain and one more pass out of the end zone ended this one.
In one other tight game, this one in Division 1 of the North Coast Section, Nathan Price booted a 33-yard field goal with four seconds left, giving No. 9 Monte Vista (8-3) a 9-6 win over No. 11 San Ramon Valley in the battle of Danville. Just two weeks early, San Ramon Valley closed the regular season with a 17-16 overtime win over Monte Vista.
In other NCS action, Dorian Hale threw for 212 yards and four touchdowns and Shamar Garrett accounted for three scores as No. 1 De La Salle recorded a 69-14 win over No. 25 Amador Valley.
Jerry Johnson passed for three touchdowns and Pittsburg's defense allowed 144 yards as No. 7 Pittsburg defeated James Logan 41-0.
Oregon-bound quarterback Jay Butterfield threw for three touchdowns and Darrion Bartley rushed for two scores as No. 5 Liberty beat No. 18 California, 50-18.
On Saturday, No. 2 Serra hosts No. 15 Half Moon Bay in the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs. Half Moon Bay (10-0) came within a CCS seedings point of being the second seed in Division II. In other CCS D1 action, No. 6 St. Ignatius hosts No. 16 Mitty on Saturday.
