The Corning Cardinals will face off against the Orland Trojans at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
On Friday, Corning came up short against Las Plumas and fell 42-33. While the Cardinals didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Thunderbirds 13-6 in the first quarter.

Corning might have lost, but man, Kaleb Flournoy was a machine: he rushed for 166 yards and three TDs on only 12 carries, and also caught one touchdown. Flournoy has become a key player for the Cardinals: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least 100 rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Casey Long, who rushed for 60 yards and one score.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Orland). They took their matchup on Friday with ease, bagging a 56-6 victory over Oroville. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 49-6.
Corning better keep an eye on Luke Schager. He was instrumental in Orland's win, rushing for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only six carries. What's more, Schager racked up 137.5 passer rating, the most he's had since back in November of 2024. Zane Frailey was another key rusher, rushing for 82 yards and one TD.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Orland was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 371 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Oroville only rushed for 189.
Orland didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Flavio Melgarejo and Esaul Velasquez. Melgarejo got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
The win made it two in a row for Orland and bumps their season record up to 6-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 18 points in those games. As for Corning, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 5-3.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Corning has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 246.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Orland struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 329 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Corning ended up a good deal behind Orland in their previous matchup back in November of 2024, losing 29-12. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Schager, who rushed for 229 yards and three scores. Now that the Cardinals know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
