The Robertson Cardinals came tearing into Saturday's game with 17 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.8 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Santa Fe Prep by a score of 63-51. Given Robertson's advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 13th, while Santa Fe Prep is ranked 60th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Robertson's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Mateo Contreras led the charge by scoring 13 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Contreras hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Nathan Gonzales, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds.
Robertson pushed their record up to 20-1 with that win, which was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season. As for Santa Fe Prep, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 11-10.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing St. Michael's the next time they take the court. Santa Fe Prep will host St. Michael's at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Robertson will head out to face them at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
