Softball Recap: Bethany Community Victorious

Bethany Community came out on top against Cornerstone Charter Academy on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run seventh inning. The Wolves took their matchup against the Cardinals 13-8. That's two games straight that the Wolves have won by exactly five runs.

Peyton Weavil and Audrey Waddell made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Weavil tossed two innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Meanwhile, Waddell struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Weavil has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. At the plate, Weavil went 4-for-5 with two triples, three runs, and two RBI, while Waddell went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave Waddell a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mattie Southard, who went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Ava Vernon was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

Bethany Community kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

The win made it two in a row for Bethany Community and bumps their season record up to 6-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Cornerstone Charter Academy, their defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 4-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Bethany Community will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on North Stokes at 6:00 p.m. on April 7. As for Cornerstone Charter Academy, they will head out to take on Walkertown at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Cardinals' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wolfpack have averaged an impressive 7.4 runs per game this season.
