The Newcomb Skyhawks were the 52-49 winner over the Wingate Bears when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Newcomb was just a bucket shy of victory on Saturday and fell 50-49 to Wingate. Newcomb has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite the loss, Newcomb still got an impressive performance from Lethia Yazzie, who scored 32 points along with nine steals and two blocks. That's the first time this season that Yazzie posted two or more blocks. Another player making a difference was Nevaeh Miller, who scored four points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
Newcomb bumped their record down to 8-8 with that loss, which was their third straight on the road. As for Wingate, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a massive bump to their 7-10 record this season.
Newcomb's road trip will continue as they head out to face Tohatchi at 7:00 p.m. on January 24th. Tohatchi will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. As for Wingate, Wingate and Navajo Prep will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 24th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Navajo Prep presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Wingate in New Mexico (Navajo Prep is ranked 26th, while Wingate is ranked 114th).
