The Texas Rangers’ selection of right-hander Cole Winn at No. 15 overall got Colorado off to a good start in the Major League draft, as the former Silver Creek High School ace was the best of many solid local prospects.

No one else got picked up Monday, but Tuesday’s second day of the draft (Rounds 3 through 10) saw several more Coloradans hear their names called.

Grant Witherspoon, CF, D’Evelyn/Tulane — fourth round, No. 120 overall by the Rays

A three-year starter for the Green Wave, Witherspoon paced Tulane this season with a .330 average, 12 homers and 53 RBIs. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Lakewood native who was a first team All-American Athletic Conference selection this year was an all-state selection at D’Evelyn while pitching and playing first base and center field, in addition to starring in basketball. Per the CHSAANow.com database, he is the first Jaguar to be drafted.

Codi Heuer, RHP, Wichita State/Fossil Ridge — sixth round, No. 168 overall by White Sox

As a 6-foot-5, 195-pound junior this season at Wichita State, Heuer was 6-5 with a 4.31 ERA while leading the Shockers in innings pitched (79 1/3) and strikeouts (82). A 2015 Fossil Ridge graduate, he’s only the second Sabercat to be drafted (Julian Garcia, Phillies, 2016). The 21-year-old’s best pitch is a fastball that sits from 92-96 mph, which he pairs with an improving slider.

Devlin Granberg, OF, Dallas Baptist/Holy Family — sixth round, No. 190 overall by Red Sox

Granberg is widely remembered by Colorado prep baseball fans for his exploits at Holy Family, where he led the Tigers to two state titles and was a three-time all-state selection. He carried that momentum to Texas, where as a junior he won the Missouri Valley Conference batting title with a .359 average. This season, as a senior, set the school record with a .443 average while also driving in 70 runs.

Steven Wilson, RHP, Santa Clara/Dakota Ridge — eighth round, No. 231 overall by the Padres

As a redshirt senior at Santa Clara, Wilson bounced back from Tommy John surgery the year before to post a 4-1 mark with a 3.07 ERA as well as averaging 11.86 strikeouts per nine inning. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder led Dakota Ridge to the Elite 8 in his senior year in 2012, also earning the Jeffco League MVP with a .462 average and seven homers.
