Augusta Christian scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Hammond, 29-28. At the time, the Skyhawks were ranked 17th in the state, while the Lions were 42nd.
Hammond suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after losing to Augusta Christian. Erik Kimrey's team had been ranked 17th, but fell to 26.
Cardinal Newman's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Kody Watson threw for 267 and two touchdowns and Evan Dubois had 170 yards receiving. On the ground Zakki Parker chipped in 129 yards. Jacob August helped Cardinal Newman's passing attack out by catching four balls for 57 yards.
6-foot-0 quarterback Watson of the Cardinals is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1802. He has also thrown 12 touchdowns. On the ground, Keith Walton's team's Thomas Banks has rushed for 852 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Nick Fortenberry. The Augusta Christian star has 36 catches for 797 yards.
Entering into this week's contest against Orangeburg Prep, Watson is short just 198 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Lions take on Heathwood Hall Episcopal. As it stands, Augusta Christian is in first, while the Highlanders are in eighth.
The Lions extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Skyhawks, 29-28. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
