For the first time this season, Emerald will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will take on the Wren Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Emerald is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 26.6 points per game this season.
Emerald is headed into the matchup out to prove that what happened against Strom Thurmond last Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Vikings came up short against the Rebels, falling 35-13. The loss continues a trend for the Vikings in their meetings with the Rebels: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite the defeat, Emerald got top-tier performance from Christopher Dean, who rushed for 160 yards and one touchdown while picking up 9.4 yards per carry. Dean is crushing it when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for at least 102 every time he's taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Wren, who bounced back after a loss on the road on September 12th. They blew past Woodruff 35-7 on Friday. The Hurricanes haven't had any issues with the Wolverines recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Wren's win came from a few key players Emerald will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Jacob Owings, who threw for 216 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 10.8 yards per attempt. 111 of those passing yards were hauled in by Carson Bryant.
Wren was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 235 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Woodruff only rushed for 141.
Wren's defense made their presence known, laying out Connor Davis four times. That dominant display was truly a team effort as four different players picked up one apiece. Another thorn in Woodruff's side was Jt Forrester, who picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made five total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Wren now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Emerald, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 3-2.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Emerald has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 177.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Wren struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 267.4 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Emerald lost to Wren on the road by a decisive 42-25 margin when the teams last played back in November of 2024. Thankfully for the Vikings, Reese Price (who rushed for 200 yards and four scores while picking up 9.1 yards per carry) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
