Senior Katie Cunningham scored 16 points to lead visiting Kellenberg
to a 54-39 win over Holy Trinity. With the win, Kellenberg improved to 10-3
overall, 7-2 in CHSAA league play, and a first-place tie with St. John the Baptist. Marist-bound senior
Emma O’Connor had a double-double (14 points and 11 rebounds) for the Lady
Firebirds. Holy Trinity junior Meghan Orlando led all scorers with 20 points .
Kellenberg and Holy Trinity played a very even first half.
Meghan Leap’s three-pointer with just 10 seconds remaining in the opening
quarter gave the Lady Firebirds a 14-9 lead. Kellenberg held on to the
five-point lead as the teams went to the break with the Lady Firebirds holding
at 25-20 lead.
The third quarter was all Kellenberg. Cunningham came out
and hit two quick threes to break the game open. The Lady Firebirds took a
commanding 44-29 lead after three quarters.
Holy Trinity went on an 8-0 run, getting six of the points
from sophomore Kristen Korzevinski, but Cunningham and O’Connor were too much
for the Lady Titans.
Cunningham knew what it would take in the second half. “We
just had to run our offense and get better looks at the basket,” Cunnigham
said. “So, we took our time on offense, and were more intense on defense. That
seemed to work for us."
With the loss, Holy Trinity fell to 9-7 overall, 3-4 in
conference play. This was Orlando’s second game
back from a hip injury. She has averaged 14.5 points in the two games. The Lady
Titans, who still have four players out with injuries, hope to get healthy for
the CHSAA playoffs.
