Mater Dei's Matt Barkley picks up yet another award, and it surely won't be his last seeing as how he has another year to go with the Monarchs. The junior quarterback was the Gatorade National Player of the Year, the first time the award had ever been given to a junior. He also was the LA-Times and Orange County Register Offensive Player of the Year. Now he has also been selected as the MaxPreps Division 2 Player of the Year.
Barkley had a spectacular season, throwing for 3,560 yards and 35 touchdowns in leading Mater Dei to a No. 1 national ranking at one point in the season. Barkley will most assuredly begin next season as the No. 1 recruit in the country.
The Monarch is joined by two other Mater Dei players on the Division 2 team, which is also dominated by players from Crespi and Oceanside. The team consists of players that played in the Division 2 CIF Bowl Game enrollment divisions. This included schools in Northern California with an enrollment of 1001 to 1,799 and schools in the south with an enrollment of 1,100 to 2,399. DIVISION 2
First Team
WR - Tommy Cogburn, South El Monte, Sr
One of the state's most prolific receives the past two seasons, Cogburn caught 87 passes for 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns this year and has 178 catches for 2,372 yards and 34 scores in two seasons. An All-San Gabriel Valley selection.
WR - Antwon Moutra, Culver City, 6-2, 187, Sr
Picked to the All-LA Times team, Moutra caught 74 passes for 1,448 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has 141 career catches for 2,724 yards and 33 touchdowns. Headed to UCLA.
TE - Joseph Fauria, Crespi, 6-7, 250, Sr
The Notre Dame recruit was All-LA Times and All-LA Daily News after catching 35 passes for 516 yards and eight touchdowns for the Celts.
OL - Khaled Holmes, Mater Dei, 6-5, 305, Sr
The anchor of the Monarch line, Holmes was an All-LA Times choice and an All-Orange County pick. He's off to USC next year.
OL - Matt Kalil, Servite, 6-8, 285, Sr
Another USC recruit, Kalil follows in the footsteps of older brother Ryan, who currently plays for the Carolina Panthers. Matt was All-LA Times and All-Orange County while also sharing Trinity league offensive lineman of the year honors with Khaled Holmes.
OL - Sam Brenner, Oceanside, 6-4, 285, Sr
Brenner earned All-San Diego honors from the Union Tribune after helping open the holes for section MVP Armani Taylor during Oceanside's Division 2 Bowl championship season. He'll play at Utah next year.
OL - Kevin Graf, Agoura, 6-6, 300, Jr
Just a junior, Graf has already committed to USC, where both his brother and father played. He earned All-LA Daily News and All-Ventura County honors this year.
OL - Ryan Dannewitz, San Jacinto, 6-7, 285, Sr
An All-Riverside County selection for the Tigers this year, Dannewitz will play at Colorado next year.
QB - Matt Barkley, Mater Dei, 6-3, 220, Jr
One of the most decorated juniors in state history, Barkley became the first junior to ever be named the national Gatorade Player of the Year. He was also All-LA Times and the Orange County offensive player of the year. He completed 213 of 340 passes for 3560 yards and 35 touchdowns. He enters his senior season with 428 completions, 716 attempts, 6,594 yards and 56 touchdowns.
QB - Dayne Crist, Notre Dame, 6-5, 230, Sr
Crist landed All-LA Daily News honors after leading Notre Dame to a 9-3 record while completing 134 of 232 passes for 2,178 yards and 16 scores. He also ran 81 times for 454 yards and four scores. Crist will head to Notre Dame in South Bend next year.
RB - Armani Taylor, Oceanside, 6-0, 200, Sr
Taylor was named the San Diego MVP by the Union Tribune and the section MVP by the Hall of Champions after leading Oceanside to the CIF Division 2 Bowl championship over Novato. Taylor ran for 1,854 yards and 31 touchdowns on 283 carries.
RB - Earl Rhodes, El Diamante, 6-1, 210, Sr
Rhodes led El Diamante to a Central Section Division 2 championship with a win over city rival Tulare. He was named the All-Tulare Offensive MVP and was first team All-Fresno Bee. He ran for 1,786 yards on 255 carries with 36 touchdowns.
AP - Ebahn Feathers, Washington, 6-1, 210, Sr
Feathers earned Fresno Bee MVP honors after running 222 times for 1,833 yards and 24 touchdowns and comleting 136 of 243 passes for 2,215 yards and 24 scores. He culminated his career with 3,566 career rushing yards and 49 touchdowns to go with 3,834 passing yards and 47 scores. Feathers will stay close to home and attend Fresno State.
AP - Austin Shanks, Crespi, 5-8, 170, Sr
Shanks did a little bit of everything for the Celts and earned selection to the All-LA Daily News team. He was also selected as the Offensive MVP of the Pac-5 Division. He ran for 1,389 yards on 216 carries and scored 16 touchdowns.
DL - Blake Ayles, Orange Lutheran, 6-4, 255, Sr
A big-time threat at tight end, Ayles earned LA Times Lineman of the Year honors for his ability on both sides of the line. He was also an All-Orange County selection after catching 44 passes for 679 yards and eight scores. Ayles, who also had six sacks on defense, is headed to USC.
DL - Matt Akers, Liberty, 6-3, 240, Sr
Akers earned All-Bakersfield Defensive MVP honors after accumulating 87 tackles and 16 sacks. He'll play at Fresno State.
DL - Anthony Miller, Mitty, 6-2, 250, Sr
A standout at tight end, where he caught 18 passes for 301 yards and five touchdowns, Miller was also devastating on defense, earning West Catholic Athletic League defensive MVP honors with 13 sacks. He'll play at Cal next year.
LB - Ricky Pemasa, Orange Lutheran, 6-1, 210, Sr
Pemasa led the Orange Lutheran defense with 102 tackles and 14 sacks while earning All-Orange County honors. He'll play at Fresno State next year.
LB - Anthony McDonald, Notre Dame, 6-3, 230, Sr
McDonald will join teammate Crist at Notre Dame next year. He earned All-LA Daily News honors after making over 100 tackles for the Knights.
LB - Rudy Burtschi, Oakdale, 6-1, 215, Sr
One of the state's top-ranked wrestlers, Burtschi was also devastating at linebacker where he earned All-Modesto Bee honors. Also solid on offense where he scored 19 touchdowns.
LB - Sean Westgate, Oak Park, 5-11, 205, Sr
Westgate was named the Ventura County defensive MVP and also earned All-LA Daily News honors. He made 130 tackles for Oak Park and will head to Arizona next year.
DB - DJ Shoemate, Servite, 6-0, 221, Sr
Shoemate could play just about any position and he usually did for the Friars. Shoemate bounced back after missing nearly all of last season with an injury to earn All-Orange County and All-LA Times honors. Had four interceptions on defense. Scored 24 TDs and ran for 1,291 yards. Also caught 40 passes for 570 yards. Will play at USC next year.
DB - Robert Golden, Edison, 5-11, 180, Sr
An All-Fresno Bee pick, Golden was a lockdown corner for Edison and will head to Arizona next year.
DB - EJ Woods, Crespi, 6-1, 205, Sr
Woods was a catalyst for the Celta on both offense and defense. He earned All-LA Times and All-LA Daily News honors thanks to 50 tackles, 4 sacks, and two interceptions on defense. He will play at UCLA next season.
DB - Rahim Moore, Dorsey, 6-2, 185, Sr
Moore was named to the All-LA Times and the All-LA City Section teams. He helped lead Dorsey to the LA City semifinals. Moore has given a verbal commitment to UCLA.
K/P - David Brown, Nordhoff, 5-10, 155, Sr
Brown earned All-Ventura County and All-LA Times honors after connecting on 15 field goals, including a long of 54 yards.
Second Team
WR - James Johnson, Valley Center, 6-1, 195, Jr
Johnson led the state with 1,582 yards receiving on 74 catches and 18 touchdowns. He was named to the All-San Diego Section team by the Hall of Champions.
WR - Robbie Boyer, Mater Dei, 6-1, 175, Sr
Matt Barkley's favorite target, and his cousin, Boyer made 57 catches for 1026 yards and 14 TDs. He was an All-Orange County selection and has 100 catches for 1,690 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career.
TE - Bobby Wagner, Colony, 6-1, 217, Sr
Wagner helped lead Colony to a CIF division title and was named to the All-San Bernardino County team by the Sun. Wagner caught 37 passes for 595 yards and 11 touchdowns and also had 125 tackles on defense.
OL - Jason Heath, Del Oro, 6-4, 260, Sr
Heath was a mainstay on the line for the Golden Eagles, earning All-Sac Bee and All-Sac-Joaquin Section honors. He'll play at UNLV next season.
OL - Greg Capella, El Diamante, 6-5, 330, Jr
This massive junior opened the holes for Earl Rhodes to run through during El Diamante's championship season. He earned All-Fresno Bee and All-Tulare County honors.
OL - Tim Keitaly, Newbury Park, 6-3, 260, Sr
Keitlay was named the Ventura County Lineman of the Year by the county coaches.
OL - Jesse Ruiz, Oakdale, 6-1, 230, Sr
Ruiz was considered the league's best lineman, according to the Modesto Bee, and helped lead Oakdale to a Sac-Joaquin Section championship.
OL - Colin Lyons-Pena, Del Campo, 6-4, 307, Sr
Named to the All-Sac Bee and All-Sac-Joaquin Section teams, Lyons-Pena will play at Oregon State next year.
QB - Corey Nielsen, Gahr, 5-11, 180, Jr
Nielsen was the leading passer in the state this season, throwing for 4,353 yards while completing 228 out of 351 passes with 35 touchdowns.
RB - Andre Smith, East Bakersfield, 5-10, 185, Sr
The All-Bakersfield pick led the state in yards per game at nearly 245. He finished with 2,189 yards despite missing several games with an injury. Smith ended his career with 4,233 career yards and 64 touchdowns.
RB - Jontell Reedom, Tulare, 5-11, 205, Jr
Reedom finished second in the state with 2,707 yards rushing on 352 carries with 24 touchdowns. Heading into his senior year, the All-Fresno Bee and All-Tulare County pick has 3,383 yards on 488 carries with 32 touchdowns.
AP - Darius Banks, Culver City, 6-2, 188, Sr
Few in state history can match Banks' career stats. After completing 183 of 335 passes for 3,030 yards and 27 touchdowns, Banks has career numbers of 586 completions, 972 attempts, 9,356 yards and 104 touchdowns. He also ran for 540 yards on 117 attempts this year with 13 touchdowns.
AP - Darius Bell, Riordan, 6-0, 220, Sr
Versatile performer earned All-Metro second team honors after completing 164 of 309 passes for 2,737 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also ran 142 times for 714 yards and seven scores.
DL - Greg Grimes, Inderkum, 6-1, 285, Sr
Grimes earned All-SacBee first team honors with 94 tackles and five sacks for the Tri-County League champions. He was named the league's Player of the Year.
DL - James Boyd, Jordan, 6-5, 215, Sr
Although he's a quarterback who threw for 2,499 yards and 23 touchdowns, Boyd is also a talented defensive end, earning the LA City Defensive Line MVP award while making 72 tackles and 11 sacks at defensive end.
DL - Je'Marcus Williams, St. Francis, 6-0, 282, Sr
The grandson of former 49er running back Delvin Williams, Je"Marcus Williams stops ballcarriers in their tracks for St. Francis. He earned All-Mercy News and All-San Francisco Metro honors.
LB - Mychal Kendrick, Hoover, 6-0, 217, Sr
Kendrick was the CMAC defensive player of the year and made the All-Fresno Bee team, racking up 175 tackles on the year.
LB - Hunter Pahl, Del Oro, 5-11, 200, Sr
Pahl was named Sacramento Bee's defensive player of the year after accumulating 78 tackles and seven sacks. He also had 20 rushing touchdowns.
LB - Casey Robertson, Foothill, 5-11, 190, Sr
Robertson led the defense for the Cougars, who posted a 12-0 record and won the first section title in school history. He had 164 tackles and was the Northern Section MVP.
LB - Jose Mendez, Novato, 5-11, 205, Sr
Mendez was the leader of the Novato defense that won the North Coast Section AA championship for the second straight season. He was named the Marin County defensive MVP and was also named to the All-San Francisco Metro team.
LB - Sam Mafi, St. Mary's, Sr
Mafi earned league defensive MVP honors while helping lead the Rams to the Division 1 championship game against Napa. He was also named to the All-Stockton Record team.
DB - Daniel Cannon, Riordan, 6-0, 185, Sr
The versatile Cannon had 116 tackles and four interceptions on defense and was one of the state's best receivers with 72 catches for 1,410 yards and 16 touchdowns. Has 13 interceptions in two years.
DB - Tim McDonald, Edison, 6-2, 185, Jr
The son of former 49er Tim McDonald Sr, Tim Jr. has already committed to USC with a year still left to play at Edison. He earned All-Fresno Bee honors as a safety.
DB - Kyle Johnston, Foothill, 5-7, 160, Sr
Johnston did a little bit of everything for the Cougars while earning All-Northern Section offensive MVP honors. Besides rushing for over 1,000 yards, he also had 24 TDs and had six interceptions on defense.
K/P - Louis Feinstein, University (Irvine), 5-10, 180, Sr
Feinstein earned All-Orange County honors with 10 field goals while also knocking 87 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone.
