Basketball Recap: Chesapeake Snaps Ten-Game Streak of Wins at Home

It was fun while it lasted, but Chesapeake's undefeated season came to an end after ten games on Tuesday. They lost 57-36 to the St. John's Catholic Prep Vikings. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Cougars came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 50th, while the Vikings are ranked 148th).

Chesapeake's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kiery Matkins, who posted nine points and eight rebounds. Matkins has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Ryleigh Smoot, who put up ten points in addition to seven boards and four steals.

Even though they lost, Chesapeake smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in February of 2024.

St. John's Catholic Prep got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Samantha Shively out in front who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 17 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Olivia Bolduc, who had 17 points along with seven rebounds and five assists.

Chesapeake's defeat ended a ten-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 10-1. As for St. John's Catholic Prep, with the victory, they broke their five-game losing streak and moved their record to 4-10.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight will be fought when the Chesapeake Cougars duke it out with the Annapolis Panthers at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for St. John's Catholic Prep, they will host Bryn Mawr at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. St. John's Catholic Prep is facing Bryn Mawr at the right time seeing as Bryn Mawr is stuck on a six-game losing streak.
