The Yorktown Tigers will square off against the Westfield Shamrocks at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Yorktown is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.6 runs per game this season.
On Wednesday, Yorktown needed a bit of extra time to put away Greenfield-Central. They came out on top against the Cougars by a score of 7-3. The Tigers haven't had any issues with the Cougars recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Olivia Jones spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Olivia Jaromin was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. Claire Hazen was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Yorktown kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Westfield faced Noblesville in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Shamrocks skirted past the Millers 7-6. Seven seems to be a good number for the Shamrocks as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Mackenzie Delph looked comfortable as she pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ava Kainrath, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sofia Easterhaus, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Yorktown's victory was their 14th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Westfield, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Yorktown hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .409. However, it's not like Westfield struggles in that department as they've averaged .342. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Yorktown skirted past Westfield 3-2 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Shamrocks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
