2017 MaxPreps National Small Schools Softball Player of the Year — Kayla Schwebke, Laconia (Rosendale, Wis.), Sr.
Schwebke was 25-0 with 23 shutouts this season as Laconia won its third-straight state title. She fanned 322 in 152 innings, allowed 51 hits and 15 base on balls while giving up three earned runs (four all total) and finished with a 0.14 ERA. Schwebke, who has signed with Wisconsin Green Bay, has gone 73-0 since her last loss in April 2015 and is 102-6 in her career. As a senior, she also threw four no-hitters and finished with 1,333 career strikeouts.

Small Schools Team of the Year — Riverton (Kan.), 25-0
Coached by Brian Mitchell, the Rams ran the table in 2017 and captured the state 3A title with a 4-1 win over previously unbeaten Rossville. As a team, they batted .419 and averaged more than 11 runs per game. They had seven players hit .350 or higher and another two batted .349 and .348. The Rams are led by MaxPreps Small Schools All-American Taylor Compton and fellow all-state members Sam Greninger, Camryn Compton, Jamee Compton and Lexi Pliler.

Small Schools Coach of the Year — Andrea Ward, North Caroline (Ridgely, Md.), 24-0
Ward guided North Caroline to the state 2A title and ran the table on the 2017 season. The Bulldogs outscored their opponents 290-50. In the state tournament, the Bulldogs recorded a pair of one-run wins before routing South Carroll (Sykesville, Md.) 8-1 for the title. They were rarely challenged scored 10 or more runs in 15 of their victories.

"I didn't expect 24-0 but at the same time I'm not surprised," Ward told the Bay Times. "This team keeps reaching new heights each time they take the field. It is amazing. The girls are so relentless. I'm so proud of them."

P — Chloe Romero, Academy of Careers & Exploration (Helendale, Calif.), Sr.
Romero is a multi-sport athlete who earned letters in softball, soccer, volleyball and cross country. Romero, signed with Texas, is a three-time MaxPreps All-American. She hit .656 with 32 RBIs, 41 runs and 21 extra base hits while leading the Eagles to an 18-2 mark. She also had 278 strikeouts in 120 innings (2.32 per inning), and tossed eight no-hitters and four one-hitters, allowing one base hit per every four innings pitched.

P — Meghan Beaubien, St. Mary Catholic Central (Monroe, Mich.), Sr.
Beaubien was 23-1 in the circle with a 0.36 ERA and 317 strikeouts in 152 innings in leading the Kestrels to their third-straight state D3 title. The two-time D3 first team All-State selection allowed 48 hits and issued 11 walks. A three-time MaxPreps All-American, she has signed with Michigan.

P — Ashley Rogers, Meigs County (Decatur, Tenn.), Sr.
Rogers is the state Gatorade softball Player of the Year signed by Tennessee. She led the Tigers (41-3) to the Class A state championship by compiling a 33-3 record and a 0.27 ERA along with a .406 batting average, seven home runs and 45 RBIs. She struck out 441 batters with 10 walks in 208 innings. She was the Class A Miss Softball winner as a sophomore and the Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Preps Player of the Year.

P — Grace Baalman, Calhoun (Hardin, Ill.), Sr.
Baalman, who struck out 39 batters in a state playoff game as a junior, has signed with Kentucky. She led Calhoun to another state final game by batting .564 with nine homers, 53 runs and 31 RBIs. She was walked 38 times. She won 28 games and posted a 0.40 ERA  in 209 innings with 455 strikeouts — a per-game average of 15.24.

P — Kelly Nelson, Norton (Mass.), Jr.
Nelson led Norton to state semifinal game where she lost in 12 innings despite striking out 28. She finished the season 21-2 with a 0.21 ERA and struck out 398 in 166 innings. In her other loss — a 1-0 defeat — she allowed one hit and struck out 17. She gave up 31 hits, tossed 18 shutouts and seven no-hitters in 2017. She also batted .372 with 24 RBIs. She struck out 20 or more in a game seven times. She was named state Gatorade Player of the Year and has committed to Massachusetts-Lowell.

P — Hailey Dolcini, Fortuna (Calif.), Sr.
The UC-Riverside signee concluded her four years at Fortuna with her finest season, going 23-2 with a 0.38 ERA and 345 strikeouts in 165 innings. She tossed seven no-hitters and 16 shutouts as the Huskies lost twice. She also batted .620 with 44 runs, 31 RBIs and 24 extra base hits.

P — Jordan Dail, Brookville (Lynchburg, Va.), Sr.
The only thing separating Dail and Brookville from a perfect season was a 1-0, 18-inning loss to Warhill (Williamsburg) in the 3A state title game. Of Dail's 22 wins, 19 were by shutout. She finished with 304 strikeouts in 153 innings and a 0.09 ERA (she allowed just two earned runs all season). She has signed with Virginia Tech.

P — Kamree Lay, Sumiton Christian (Ala.), Sr.
Signed with West Alabama, Lay's teammates Jenna Ergle and Kendall Beth Sides might get most of the attention, but after winning a national-leading 47 games, Lay is a first-team pick. In 305 innings, she struck out 463 batters and posted a 0.96 ERA as Sumiton won the state 1A title. Lay pitched 11 no-hitters (four perfect games), 20 shutouts and 40 complete games. She was 6-0 in the state tournament. In her final two seasons at Sumiton, Lay was 90-10 with 835 strikeouts and 41 shutouts.

P — Keely Rochard, Warhill (Williamsburg, Va.), Sr.
Named the state's 3A Player of the Year, Rochard went 25-0 and led Warhill to the state 3A championship. The future Virginia Tech softball player struck out 364 in 187 innings and allowed four earned runs for a 0.19 ERA. She also batted .333 with 39 RBIs.

P — Mia Faieta, Cedar Grove (N.J.), Sr.
Faieta pitched the "perfect" perfect game as she struck out every batter she faced. It was one of four she pitched this season. She had a state-best 384 strikeouts and 18 earned runs allowed in 176 innings to lead Cedar Grove to Small Group 1 title. Faieta finished the season with three no-hitters in the state tournament. She also threw out the first pitch at a New York Yankees game.

C — Taylor Johnson, Beecher (Ill.), Sr.
The 2017 Daily Journal Player of the Year is also a four-time IHSA first team All-State selection and a four-time River Valley Conference Player of the Year. Johnson racked up eye-popping numbers as she led Beecher to a state championship crown. The local legend hit .477 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs despite walking 33 times.

C — Shelby Gayre, D'Hanis (Texas), Sr.
D'Hanis went 14-14, but Gayre put on a hitting clinic in each game ripping 19 home runs, 16 doubles, 62 runs scored and knocking in 61. She batted .722 with a 1.766 slugging percentage and didn't strike out in 106 plate appearances. She has signed with Kansas.

C — Danielle Romanello, Canterbury (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Sr.
Romanello, who has signed with Florida, put up big numbers in the Crusaders' title-winning season: .527 batting average, 36 RBIs, 41 runs and 19 extra base hits. She was named Miracle Sports' 2A Hitter of the Year.

IF — Carly Wagers, Williamsburg (Ohio), Jr.
Wagers hit and pitched the Wildcats to the state D4 title game. She set state records with 23 home runs and 86 RBIs while batting .646 with a 1.531 slugging percentage. As a pitcher, Wagers produced an 18-1 record with a 0.40 ERA and 268 strikeouts in 122 innings. She was Ohio's Gatorade softball Player of the Year.

IF — Bailey Dowling, St. Joseph-Ogden (St. Joseph, Ill.), Fr.
The freshman made a major impact on state softball when she hit .655 with 22 home runs (second best in state history), 14 doubles, five triples, 70 runs, 78 hits and 66 RBIs. Chosen as a unanimous first team 2A All-State performer, Dowling has committed to Alabama.

IF — Payton Calderon, Ralls (Texas), Sr.
Calderon hit .546 with seven home runs and 48 RBIs as the Jackrabbits made their third straight trip to the Class 2A regional semifinals. Calderon was named the Lone Star Varsity Softball Player of the Year.

IF — Jenna Ergle, Sumiton Christian, Sr.
Ergle is only softball player in Alabama High School Athletic Association history to break 100 runs batted in for a season four times – 127 as a freshman in 2014, 103 as a sophomore, 106 as a junior and 124 this season. Her 460 total is a national record for a four-year career. Ergle is a five-time All-State player and has 528 career RBIs. Signed by Boston College, Ergle led Sumiton to another state title when she homered 24 times and drove in 124 teammates. As a senior, she batted .544 despite being walked 53 times. Her on-base percentage was .651.

IF — Taylor Bump, Canterbury, Sr.
Bump was named the 2A Player of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers and Miracle Sports. Bump, who has signed with Michigan, hit .552 with a state-leading 16 home runs and 49 RBIs. During the postseason, she was 8-for-14 with nine RBIs in four games. She also knocked in the winning run in the state championship game.

IF — Emma Webb, Christian Academy of Knoxville (Tenn.), Sr.
Webb drove in 80 runs, had 22 doubles and 13 homers as Christian Academy went 44-8 and won the state D1-AA title. The All-State senior batted .539 with 89 hits and scored 62 times.

IF — Mikayla Rojas, Heritage Academy (Laveen, Ariz.), Sr.
Headed to West Point, Rojas had another monster season for the 15-2 Heroes. She had a base hit, scored a run and drove in a run in every game as she hit .881 with 55 runs scored and 71 RBIs. During her senior season, Rojas had three hits in every game except three. She also blasted 18 home runs, and hit two or more in five games. For her 70-game prep career, Rojas clubbed 70 home runs and had 248 RBIs.

IF — Kaylee Learman, Greenwood (Wis.), Jr.
Learman was named the D5 Player of the Year by the Wisconsin Fastpitch Coaches Association. She went 48-for-64 this spring for a .750 batting average. She hit as many home runs — 16 — as she made out. She also drove in 53.

IF — Hannah Peterson, South Summit (Kamas, Utah), Sr.
Peterson batted .584 with 52 hits, 16 doubles, six homer, 48 RBIs and51 runs scored to lead South Summit to the state 2A title. She also pitched — 19-3 with a 1.47 ERA and 199 strikeouts. Signed with College of Southern Idaho, she was named state's 2A Player of the Year.

IF — Josie Page, Washington County (Chatom, Ala.), Sr.
Page, a Florida signee batted .604 with a .693 on-base percentage, 78 RBIs, 61 hits, 52 runs, 24 doubles and 15 steals. She was named to the state's Top 10 Super team.

IF — Kaylee Lopez, North Vermilion (Maurice, La.), Sr.
Lopez helped lead North Vermilion to a 3A title with a .612 batting average that included 16 home runs and 29 RBIs. She was 5-for-5 in the title-game win for the Patriots. Lopez was named the state's 3A Player of the Year.

OF — Kendall Beth Sides, Sumiton Christian, Sr.
Sides, who has signed with Alabama, led the Eagles (57-9) to the Class 1A state championship when she compiled a .606 batting average with 13 home runs, 85 RBIs, 109 runs scored and 99 stolen bases. She is the national record-holder for career runs and stolen bases, a four-time All-State selection, a three-time Super All-State honoree and was named the Class 2A Player of the Year as a junior. Sides also is a two-time MaxPreps All-American and Alabama Gatorade winner.

OF — Rachel Hammons, Bourgade Catholic (Phoenix), Jr.
Hammons had another big season as she batted .658, scored 76 runs, drove in 32 and stole 68 bases. She was the catalyst that led the 28-6 Golden Eagles to the state 2A silver trophy as she earned All-State honors.

OF — Makayla Guerra, Silver (Silver City, N.M.), Sr.
Guerra batted .562 and drove in 59 runs to lead Silver to the state 3A title. She had 16 doubles, 10 triples and seven home runs. She was a first team All-State selection.

OF — Leah Lafata, Mariposa County (Mariposa, Calif.), Sr.
Lafata led Mariposa County to the California Interscholastic Federation's Sac-Joaquin Section D5 finals. She batted .531, scored 35 times and drove in 30 runs. When not playing the outfield, she was difficult to solve in the circle with 15-1 record and 0.89 ERA. She also struck out 169 in 102 innings. She is a first team All-State pick.

UTIL — Linnay Wilson, Coalinga (Calif.), Sr.
Wilson led the Horned Toads in the circle (21-4 with a 0.83 ERA, 226 strikeouts in 143 innings) and at the plate (batting .589, 22 extra base hits, 56 hits, 46 RBIs) as they won the CIF Central Section D5 title. She is a first team All-State pick.

UTIL — Brenna Chavez, Needles (Calif.), Sr.
Chavez lead the California-Nevada border town team to a 26-4 season and the Nevada state 2A champions. Chavez drove in 60 runs, scored 54 and batted .611 with 31 extra base hits, including a dozen home runs and 16 doubles. Needles holds the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record among all classes, with 12 state softball championships.

Second team
P — Maddy Stockslager, South (Torrance, Calif.), Sr.
Stockslager led South to nine straight wins and the  CIF Southern Section D5 title. She was named the section D5 P{layer of the Year after going 16-5 with a 0.66 ERA and striking out 228 in 137 innings. She also batted .400. In her final four playoff games, Stockslager was 4-0, tossing 28 innings, allowing 10 hits, two earned runs and striking out 57. She has signed with Chaminade (Hawaii).

P — Emily Phelan, Bishop Kearney (Rochester, N.Y.), Fr.
Phelan pitched nine no-hitters, including two perfect games. The Section 5 Class C2 tournament Most Valuable Player struck out 358 batters with a 0.42 ERA. She also had a .704 on-base percentage with a .432 batting average. Phelan was named the state's C2 Player of the Year. Phelan pitched a trio of one-run victories in the state tournament as Bishop Kearney won the state title.

P — Kennedy DeMatteis, Moniteau (West Sunbury, Pa.), Sr.
DeMatteis lost one a game, a two-hitter in the state tournament. She finished the season 21-1 with a 0.30 ERA (five earned runs) and struck out 167 in 94 innings. She also batted .507 and drove in 35 runs. The All-State pick will attend Gannon.

P — Taylor Compton, Riverton, Sr.
Compton led Riverton to the 3A state title and 25-0 season. She was 24-0 with a 0.73 ERA and 217 strikeouts in 134 innings. She also batted .349 with 19 RBIs. She set a state record with 80 career wins and will attend Pittsburg State. She was named the state 3A Player of the Year.

P — Madison Booth, Patrick Henry (Glade Spring, Va.), Sr.
Named the Virginia High School League's Group 1A softball Player of the Year, Booth won 21 games for a Rebel team that reached the state semifinals. She had a 1.12 ERA with 360 strikeouts. She also batted .387 with 31 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

P — Lilly Robles, Heritage Christian (Northridge, Calif.), Sr.
Robles lit up ‘em in 2017 with a 24-4 record and 290 strikeouts in 178 innings for the CIF Southern Section D5 runners up. She also batted .402 and was named D5 section Player of the Year.

P — MacKenzie Bryan, Elwood (Ind.), Sr.
Bryan led the state in pitching wins with 25 and had a 1.39 ERA as the Panthers finished second in the state title game. She struck out 280 in 190 innings. She also hit 13 home runs and drove in 46. The first team All-State choice will attend Northern Illinois University.

P — Victoria Sebastian, Ramsey (N.J.), So.
Sebastian went 27-1 with a 0.92 ERA and 196 strikeouts. She batted .583 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs to lead the Rams to the state North 1, Group 2 championship. The Rams finished the season 29-1 with the All-State selection Ramsey playing a major role.

P — Amy Woodham, Slocomb (Ala.), Sr.
Woodham, who has signed with Chipola College, helped lead Slocomb to a Class 3A state runner-up finish and 35-14 record. She had a 30-10 record and led all Alabama 3A pitchers in strikeouts with 285. She had a 1.19 ERA. Woodham had a .440 batting average and a .513 on-base percentage with 53 RBIs, 32 runs scored, six homers, 18 doubles and 20 steals.

P — Lexi Hutchins, Joaquin (Texas), So.
Hutchins, an All-State pick, was big reason Joaquin won 34 games as she batted .521 with 65 RBIs, 50 runs, 21 doubles and 14 homers. Her slugging percentage was 1.134. In addition, Hutchins threw six no-hitters, won 32-of-39 decisions and posted a 1.07 ERA in 223 innings with 237 strikeouts.

C — Maddy Thomas, DeSales (Walla Walla, Wash.), Jr.
Thomas hit 23 home runs, 12 doubles, eight triples, had 72 RBIs and batted .780 in leading DeSales to 22-6 season and fifth-place finish at state 2B. She is an All-East Washington first team choice.

C — Josey White, Lake Mead Academy (Henderson, Nev.), Jr.
White's team was 13-9, but her stats were huge: .833 batting average (second in the nation), 50 hits, 53 RBIs, 53 runs, .873 on base, 1.666 slugging, 27 extra base hits. She will attend Stanford.

C — Carlee Selle, Reese (Mich.), Sr.
Named the MLive Bay City Softball Player of the Year, Selle batted .620 with seven home runs, eight triples, 17 doubles and 56 RBIs. And she's best known for her defensive skills. She is headed to Kent State.

IF — Paige Kortz, Napoleon (Mich.), Sr.
Kortz led the team in nearly every category in the regular season, including batting average (.611), slugging percentage (.984), on-base percentage (.622), hits (77), runs (69), singles (54), triples (6), home runs (9) and steals (31). A .611 batting average as a senior bumped Kortz's career average to higher than .500. Kortz, who has signed with Ferris State, was All-State and the Jackson Citizen Patriot softball Player of the Year.

IF — Charisma Romero, Academy of Careers & Exploration, Jr.
Like her All-American older sister (first teamer Chloe Romero), Charisma put up impressive numbers: .714 batting average, 39 runs, 44 RBIs, 25 extra base hits and a 1.257 slugging percentage. She committed one error on the season. An All-Area selection, Romero has committed to Boston College.

IF — Ashton Phillips, Scio (Ore.), Jr.
Phillips batted .676 and had a 29-game hitting streak. She hit 14 doubles, four home runs, stole 32 bases, had 43 RBIs and scored 71 runs. A first team All-State 3A choice, she has committed to Oregon State.

IF — Kennedy Ratliff, Rison (Ark.), Sr.
Ratliff was clutch all season for the Wildcats as they won the state 2A title and finished 28-5. She batted .604 and combined to produce 88 runs on 55 hits and 27 stolen bases. In the final three state tournament games, Ratliff had eight hits and drove in five runs. She has signed with Arkansas.

IF — Chardae Hoskins, Escalon (Calif.), Jr.
Hoskins led Escalon to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D5 title when she batted .512 with 40 RBIs and won 12-of-13 pitching decisions. She recorded a 1.53 ERA and struck out 147 in 86 innings. She has committed to Simpson University.

IF — Hallie Donald, Mooreville (Miss.), Sr.
Despite walking more than once a game, Donald batted .434 and drove in 30 runs as Mooreville won the state 2A title. Donald was also 15-2 with a 1.44 ERA and fanned 136 batters in 106 innings. She was named to the All-state team.

IF — Sydney Kuma, Caruthers (Calif.), So.
Though she was walked for more than half of her plate appearances, Kuma responded with a .613 average, an .800 on-base percentage and a 1.290 slugging percentage. The Georgia commit also stole 15 bases and was 12-4 in the circle with 162 strikeouts in 99 innings. She was first team All-State.

IF — Kylie Hill, Dayton (Ore.), Sr.
Hill, a three-time All-State selection, batted .519 with a .592 on-base percentage and 1.025 slugging percentage. She hit 10 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, drove in 50 and scored 34 runs as Dayton reached the state finals for the third-straight season. Hill, Oregon's 2016 3A Player of the Year, will attend Walla Walla Community College.

IF — Keana Pola, Godinez (Santa Ana, Calif.), So.
Pola was as impressive this year as she was as a freshman, finishing the year with 56 hits, a .622 batting average, 49 runs and 29 extra base hits in 28 games. Her on-base percentage was .685 and she slugged 1.044. The Grizzly Bears finished the season 22-6 and in the CIF Southern Section D5 semifinals. Pola was named to the CIF-SS All-Star team.

IF — Alexandria King, Goreville (Ill.), So.
King led Goreville to the state 1A championship. She had a .602 average with 51 RBIs and struck out once in 34 games. In the state title game, she pitched a nine-inning shutout, giving up 5 hits and striking out 13. King, an All-District and All-State pick, has committed to Southern Illinois.

IF — Anna Borgen, Dallas Christian (Mesquite, Texas), Sr.
Borgen had a base hit in all but two of the Charges' 42 games (34 wins). She batted .711, drove in 64 and scored 63 times. She also had 24 doubles and 35 extra base hits. In addition, Borgen was 18-2 with a 0.97 ERA and struck out 184 batters in 115 innings. She pitched four no-hitters and has signed with Mississippi.

IF — Sierra Gilmore, Northeastern (Fountain City, Ind.), Sr.
Gilmore finished the season first in the state 2A ranks with a .653 batting average, 17 home runs and 57 runs scored. She also had four triples, 11 doubles and 36 RBIs, and finished with 64 hits as the Knights finished with a 22-6 record. She was first team All-State and MVP in the state All-Star game. Gilmore has signed with Murray State.

OF — Taylei Williams, Juab (Nephi, Utah), Sr.
Williams closed out her prep career with a 20-3 record, 1.15 RA and 243 strikeouts in 145 innings. She pitched 22 complete games, 11 shutouts and five no-hitters as Juab played deep into the state playoffs. She also batted .569 with nine homers and 38 RBIs. A perennial All-State choice and state Gatorade Player of the Year in 2016, Williams has signed with Southern Utah University.

OF — Erin Collins, Hereford (Parkton, Md.), Sr.
At the plate, Collins batted .656 with 42 RBIs and 29 runs scored. She hit eight home runs and never struck out. In 108 innings, she had a 1.10 ERA and struck out 181. She threw a no-hitter against Loch Raven in the second round of the Class 2A state playoffs, striking out 17. The Baltimore Sun's softball Player of the Year, Collins will continue her softball career at Rutgers.

OF — Reagen Lyle, St. Cloud Tech (St. Cloud, Minn.), Sr.
Lyle was a finalist for Times Area Softball Player of the Year honors. She hit .521 with 12 RBIs, 24 runs and stole an area-best 49 bases. She struck out twice in 71 at-bats and has not made an error in the outfield in two years (more than 70 chances). She has also played shortstop and caught. A career .462 hitter (135-for-292) with 100 runs scored, 44 RBIs and 139 stolen bases. She owns state records for steals in a game (7), season and career and has signed to play for the University of Wisconsin.

UTIL — Emily Vanckhoven, Junction (Texas), Sr.
The Eagles senior pitcher/catcher is a repeat selection as the All-West Texas MVP. She had a .750 batting average, a 1.587 slugging percentage, 17 doubles, 13 triples, eight home runs and 54 RBIs. She scored 41 times. She played catcher for the first time when she wasn't pitching and thrived there as well. Junction reached the area round of the Class 2A playoffs.

UTIL — Cassie McGrath, Tuckahoe (Eastchester, N.Y.), Sr.
McGrath, a sixth-year varsity starter, batted .706 with 59 RBIs and 24 extra base hits in 21 games and was named first team All-State. She also was 18-3 with a 0.75 ERA and struck out 252 batters in 121 innings. She had three or more hits in a game in 10 games.

UTIL — Brielle Stephens, Durham (Calif.), Sr.
The College of Idaho-bound Stephens batted .600 with 51 RBIs and 35 runs scored in 25 games. She had 26 extra-base hits and in one game hit for the cycle, had six hits and drove in nine runs. She was also named small school All-State.

Zimmerman, who was named News Sentinel Sports Awards Softball Player of the Year, posted a 33-4 record with a 1.17 ERA while also batting .447 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs to help the Warriors win the state D1-AA state championship.
