The Benedictine Bengals will take on the Lake Catholic Cougars in a holiday battle at at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Benedictine is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They took their contest on Saturday with ease, bagging an 82-47 victory over John Hay. With that win, the Bengals brought their scoring average up to 56.2 points per game.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Benedictine to victory, but perhaps none more so than Damone Darmond, who almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine boards. Darmond continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. Bryce Meitin was another key player, putting up 15 points and three steals.
Benedictine smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in four consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Lake Catholic humbled Wickliffe with a 76-46 victory. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cougars.
Benedictine better keep an eye on Ace Peterlin. He was instrumental in Lake Catholic's win, going 7 of 11 on his way to 17 points. Peterlin's afternoon made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Frankie Trinetti, who posted seven points along with nine rebounds and three steals.
Benedictine's victory bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Lake Catholic, their win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 2-1.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Benedictine hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 56.2 points per game. However, it's not like Lake Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging 72.7 points. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Benedictine skirted past Lake Catholic 58-56 when the teams last played back in December of 2023. Will Benedictine repeat their success, or does Lake Catholic have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
