Bagdad is 7-1 against Mohave Accelerated since October of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Sultans will head out on the road to square off against the Patriots at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Bagdad is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Arizona's top teams: Desert Heights Prep, who was ranked fifth at the time (Bagdad was ranked second). The Sultans blew past the Yote, posting a 67-22 victory. The Sultans haven't had any issues with the Yote recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.
Bagdad got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Thomas Rodriguez out in front who rushed for 166 yards and four TDs on only 11 carries. Rodriguez's longest rush was for an impressive 60 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Josiah Kirchoff was in the mix too, providing Bagdad with two scores.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Bagdad proved: they limited Desert Heights Prep to a paltry 2.1 yards per carry. The team can thank Aubrey Oland for the heroic effort on defense: he. Bagdad didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 12.2.
Bagdad's defense didn't let Mason Wicker, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for six sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Rowdy Hooper and Oland, who racked up five sacks between them.
Meanwhile, Mohave Accelerated never let their opponents score on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Red Rock 52-0. That looming 52-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Patriots yet this season.
Mohave Accelerated's win came from a few key players Bagdad will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Owen Honegger, who picked up 165 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Those 165 receiving yards gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Rylan Krahenbuhl, who threw for 208 yards and three TDs on only 13 passes.
Bagdad's record now sits at 5-0. As for Mohave Accelerated, their record is now 4-2.
Everything came up roses for Bagdad against Mohave Accelerated in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as the squad secured a 62-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Sultans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
