Football Recap: Germantown Sets Scoring Season-High Against Murrah

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Germantown). Their defense stepped up to hand the Murrah Mustangs a 56-0 shutout on Thursday. Given the Mavericks' advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi football rankings (they are ranked eighth, while the Mustangs are ranked 183rd) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Germantown's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Nyrikius Johnson led the charge by rushing for 50 yards, while also catching one TD. Lawson Branson was another key back, rushing for 56 yards and one score.

Germantown's run defense was locked in: Murrah could only muster 2.5 yards per carry. The dominant display was nothing new: the Mavericks have now limited their opponent to fewer and fewer yards per carry in three consecutive contests.

Germantown's win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-3. Those home victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 43.5 points over those games. As for Murrah, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-10.

Coming up, Germantown will square off against DeSoto Central at 7:00 p.m. on the 14th. The Mavericks will be up against the Jaguars' rather soft defense (which has allowed 27.09 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. Murrah does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
