Andover played well in a lot of phases of Tuesday’s 72-55 win over Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail foe Rose Hill.
However, Trojan coach Jason Stucky was unimpressed with his team’s inability to play with attitude.
“I’ve told our guys over and over to have a nastiness,” Stucky told the Wichita Eagle. “We had nastiness against Kingman, we had nastiness in the championship at the Coffeyville tournament. Tonight I didn’t see that.”
Stucky was also irritated that the Trojans gave up 35 first half points and twice allowed the Rockets to rally from double-digit deficits to pull within one score.
Although the Trojans did lack intensity at times, Andover out-rebounded the Rockets 49-30, shot well from the floor (26-of-58) and won by 17 points over an 8-5 team to maintain its Class 4A No. 4 ranking.
The Trojans jumped on Rose Hill 11-1 in the opening moments of the game. But the Rockets put together an 8-0 run to get back to within two points before trailing 21-15 at the conclusion of the opening period.
After falling behind 33-22 in the second frame, the Rockets rallied with a 13-3 spurt to narrow the gap to 36-35 with 1:31 remaining in the first half.
Rose Hill’s bugaboo was poor free throw shooting in the third quarter. The Rockets made just 3-of-12 charity shots in the frame and were 14-of-30 for the game.
While long range shooting was an asset for Rose Hill for much of the game, the Rockets were just 1-of-5 during the third period. Andover out scored Rose Hill 20-12 in the final period to pull away.
Luke Meisch and Brandon Hilyard led the Trojans with 16 points each, and were credited with 28 rebounds collectively. Thomas Jobe and Tom O’Connell added 14 and 12 points respectively. Sam Newton led the Rockets with 15 points. Tyler Shirley and Caleb Brown each had 14.
The top four spots in 4A remained unchanged. Wamego moved into the No. 10 spot following De Soto’s 54-50 loss to Tonganoxie.
