Delaware High School Basketball - St. Elizabeth thwarted by Salesianum
January 10, 2014: Wilmington, DE 19805 The St. Elizabeth Vikings basketball team (Wilmington, DE), was toppled 46-28 in Friday's league battle with the visiting Salesianum Sallies (Wilmington, DE)
The Sallies now possess a 7-1 record. They put it on the line next when they travel to Tatnall for a non-league battle on Tuesday, January 14. Salesianum will confront a Hornets team coming off a 64-59 non-league loss to Howard (Wilmington, DE). The Hornets record now stands at 1-7.
The Vikings (1-5) will now prepare for their battle against Sanford (Hockessin, DE). The Warriors come into the non-league battle with a 4-2 record.
First Quarter
The Viking's took on the #2 team in the State of DE shorthanded with guard Bryan Miles out with a fractured hand and Brandon Gautier
slowed by a sprained foot. With a gutsy man to man defense, the Viking's stayed close to the Sals. Sr. 6'8 center Brian Oneill used
his football talents to bully his way to 7 points to lead the Sals to a 7 point lead.
Second Quarter
St. Elizabeth, behind freshman Malik Curry's 7 points and 2 steals , made a strong comeback in the second stanza. Despite losing Center
Joe Schiavoni one minute into the 1st quarter, St. E's held a 1 point lead until Clark from the Sals hit a shot at the buzzer to take a
1 point lead into halftime.
Third Quarter
St. E's scored only 1 point in the 3rd quarter due to costly turnovers and bad shots and decisions. Despite all the bad play, St. E's
was down by only 11 points entering the final stanza. Brandon Gautier did an outsanding job defending Dante DiVincenzo who
committed to Villanova earlier this week holding him to just 9 points through 3 quarters. Unfortuanately, Malik Curry was unable
to return to action in the second half and the Vikings were really shorthanded.
Fourth Quarter
When the Vikings had to press the Sals to try to overtake them in this quarter, Divincenzo took over and scored 10 points to become
the scoring leader of the game and lead the Sals to a 46-28 victory in the very hotly contested game. Mike Piekarski was the St. E
leading scorer with 9 points from 3 three point shots.
