Connecticut High School Softball - Haddam-Killingworth can't get by Coginchaug Regional
May 27, 2012: Higganum, CT 06441 The Coginchaug Regional Blue Devils softball team scored 5 runs and limited the host Haddam-Killingworth Cougars to 4 in the Blue Devils non-league triumph on Sunday.
With the triumph, Coginchaug Regional moves its record to 19-4 on the year. The Blue Devils travel to Academy of the Holy Family (Baltic, CT) to play the Marists in a non-league game on Wednesday, May 30. The Marists come into the game with a record of 12-9. Academy of the Holy Family won 11-6 in their recent non-league game against Kaynor Tech (Waterbury, CT)
In their next game, the Cougars play the Tolland Eagles (Tolland, CT) in a non-league game, on Tuesday, May 29. Haddam-Killingworth will attempt to move on its 11-7 season record. The Eagles come into the game with a 4-5 record after their 6-0 league loss to Edwin O. Smith (Storrs, CT).
Game Summary
In the most exciting game of the year the CRHS Blue Devils prevail over the HK Cougars, 5-4 in extra innings and win the Shoreline Conference Championship! Mari Handley got the win for the Blue Devils going all 9 innings, scattering 10 hits, allowing 4 runs and striking out 6 against the potent HK offense.
The Blue Devils found themselves down by 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th when their bats came alive. Lauren Esposito doubled and Kayla Votto followed with a triple to bring her home. After Handley was HBP and an intentional walked to load the bases, Katelyn Williams drove a single up the middle for 2 RBIs and CRHS took the lead. HK came back and there were 3 lead changes in the last 3 innings. Kayla Votto lead the offense going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, including the big game winning hit in the bottom of the 9th, plating her sister Courtney Votto. Espo was 1 for 3 with a double, a run scored, and 2 walks. Marissa Puchalski had the big game tying single in the bottom of the 7th.
