Georgia High School Basketball - Colquitt County nips Monroe
December 29, 2016: Moultrie, GA 31768 Fans at Thursday's non-league challenge between the Colquitt County Packers (Moultrie, GA) and the visiting Monroe Tornadoes (Albany, GA), saw Colquitt County's basketball squad hold off Monroe by a count of 60-59.
With the victory, Colquitt County upgrades its record to 12-2 on the campaign. The Packers host Dougherty (Albany, GA) to play the Trojans in a non-league challenge on Tuesday, January 3. The Trojans come into the challenge with a record of 9-4. Dougherty won 57-43 in their recent non-league challenge against Terrell County (Dawson, GA)
Next up, the Tornadoes play the Dougherty Trojans (Albany, GA) in a AAA Region 1 challenge, on Friday, January 6. Monroe will attempt to upgrade on its 9-5 season record.
First Quarter
Monroe fell to Colquitt County on Thursday, 60-59, even with Jordan Taylor scoring 20 points. Colquitt County (Moultrie, GA) clinched their lead in the fourth quarter on a two-pointer.
Despite the fact that Monroe Tornado Varsity increased their efforts against Colquitt County during the second half of the game, it wasn't enough to overtake Colquitt County's strong first half.
Taylor was the front runner for Monroe's offense with 20 points, including nine during the third period. He also contributed seven rebounds.
Ulysses Williams made it into double digits, scoring 16 points for Monroe (7-for-21). Also chipping in for Monroe were Julius Nelson (7 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal), Kyler Hughes (7 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals), Fredrick West (5 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals), Karim Aqeel (2 points, 3 rebounds), and Alpreze Thomas (2 points, 7 rebounds). Williams was a big defensive contributor as well, racking up eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Second Quarter
Monroe finished the game with 38 rebounds (12 offensive / 26 defensive), two blocks and nine steals.
